Last month, the Permanent Representatives Committee of the EU member states agreed the European Commission’s proposal to amend the EC regulations for social security.
The most noticeable changes in the allocation rules are the following:
- The period that an employee must be covered by the legislation of the Member State in which his employer is established prior to his secondment, will be extended to three months (which is currently one month).
- A person residing outside the territory of the EU, who pursues his activities alternatively in two or more Member States, shall be deemed to be covered for social security in the Member State where he pursues the major part of his activities.
It is not yet clear when the proposed changes will enter into force, however, it is advisable to keep these already in mind for new/extended international assignments.
